The Museum Island (Museumsinsel) complex consists of five separate museums that are home to a impressive collection of 19th-century art and also a well-known archaeological collection. Work began on these buildings in 1830 and it took over 100 years until it was finally completed.
The Old National Gallery (The Alte Nationalgalerie) features German paintings and sculptures, and also includes some important works of art from some of the French impressionists and 24 paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. The Old Museum (Altes Museum) is an exceptional building, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The main floor offers an extensive collection of antiquities and the upstairs galleries are home to many changing exhibitions.
